Celery Juice: A Magical Drink for Reversing Disease
Celery is a Herbal Food
Lately, I’ve been reading how celery is hailed as a miraculous herbal food, and claims to reverse all sorts of disease.
As a clinician, I am skeptical, but as a patient, I am intrigued. I’ve done the research to understand that celery is much more than a vegetable.
Celery (Apium graveolens) is a plant from the family Apiaceae, and phenolic and antioxidant compounds of this plant have been studied extensively, especially in the Alternative Medicine space. (1)
This fantastic green veggie is one of the annual or perennial plants that grow throughout Europe and the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Asia. (2)
Celery contains compounds such as limonene, selinene, frocoumarin glycosides, flavonoids, and vitamins A and C. Additionally, it is the most used plant in traditional medicine. (3)
I love anything that is easy, cheap, and can implement using real food.
Knowing that diet fads come and go constantly, I stay weary when I hear of such grand claims.
But recently, the Medical Medium books and blogs that I’ve been consuming is really helping me see beyond the science.
So I’ve been experimenting with celery juice and it’s been amazing!
I’ve been juicing for a long time. Juicing was my attempt to get as many vegetables into my kids as possible but when I heard about the benefits of celery juice, I figured it was worth a try.
Benefits of Celery Juice
Celery juice is a powerful anti-inflammatory and highly beneficial for those who suffer from chronic diseases.
These diseases include diabetes (5), high cholesterol (6), or autoimmune diseases (7) such as Lupus, Hashimoto’s, RA, Fibromyalgia, Lyme’s Disease, Migraines, Vertigo, Celiac Disease, Irritable Bowel Disease, Psoriasis (8), Eczema, GERD, Constipation, Neuropathy, and any Digestive Issues.
Celery is known for decreasing inflammation by starving pathogens in the body, such as harmful bacteria and viruses. (4)
It contains a host of mineral salts that work like an antiseptic, which have the ability to break down the pathogens’ cell membranes, killing and destroying them. (9)
Mineral salts are essential for our bodies to function optimally by keeping your kidneys and adrenals functioning at their best.
Also for those who have digestive issues or GERD, the mineral salts in celery juice help to optimize HCl production. As a result, your body’s ability to absorb the nutrients from the foods you eat is enhanced.
Additionally, mineral salts in celery also enhance electrical activity in the body, which improves neural signals and helps with nerve function.
This is important because our brain uses electrical signals to allow our body to transmit proper signals to our organs and muscles.
Such mineral salts also help by supporting the brain’s neurotransmitters. This is great for those who struggle with depression, anxiety, brain fog, bipolar disorder, and focus.
Celery does this by enhancing the GABA, glycine, and magnesium absorbed by the brain.
Celery also helps with methylation, especially for those with genetic defects (SNPs), by enhancing the utilization of a multitude of nutrients, including B12 and zinc.
The electrolytes in celery hydrate our bodies at the cellular level and reduce the risk for migraines, anxiety, panic attacks, and much more.
Helps with Autoimmune Conditions
Celery’s antibacterial and antiviral capabilities help those with an autoimmune condition.
Autoimmune conditions occur when our immune system mistakenly attacks our own cells rather than the pathogen.
For that reason, it’s important to understand that your immune system is typically triggered by injury or invasion.
Pathogens cause both because they are both invaders and causes injury to our healthy cells.
By deploying these pathogenic effects, celery juice can modulate our immune system by fending off the invasion and healing the injury. For that reason, it may reverse autoimmunity.
Alkalizes Your Body
Many of you likely have been told that you have a lack of gastric acid so you’ve been prescribed proton pump inhibitors which reduces gastric acid.
Rather, contrary to conventional belief, many of you lack hydrochloric acid rather than have too much.
Celery helps to produce healthy amounts of HCL to enable healthy digestion and help the liver produce healthy amount of bile to aid in further digestion of foods.
This ability to produce HCl (an acid) is actually alkalizing our body because it enables the body to absorb more nutrients, shifting our body into an alkaline state.
As mentioned, the minerals in celery juice helps the cells bind to toxins, neutralize, and detoxify by enhancing our body’s ability to urinate, sweat, and defecate the toxins out of our system.
Even more, celery also helps with your kidney function for improved toxin removal. (8)
Helps with Glowing Skin and Hair
Celery is loaded with vitamins A, B, C, K, niacin, and folate which are responsible for repair of our skin damage.
Also, celery contains healthy minerals that help your skin look more youthful.
So How Do You Incorporate Celery?
I highly recommend drinking celery juice in the morning before meals. One bunch of celery will give you approximately 16 oz of celery juice.
Use organic celery and a masticating juicer to extract the juice out, minus the fiber. This ensures that you receive the medicinal benefits without your body trying to digest the fiber.
The taste of celery juice can be very hard to swallow initially, so you can add a cucumber or an apple. But keep in mind, the celery by itself works the best.
I’ve tried it both ways and now I prefer the celery juice by itself.
