Lupus Flare

Lupus Flares and Signs of Lupus Flare can vary from patient to patient.  However, if you can be vigilant and be aware of such signs and symptoms of Lupus flare, you can potentially prevent a full fledged flare.

  • Aching or increased swelling of the joints
  • Weakness and pain of the muscles
  • Unusual fevers
  • Unusual exhaustion and/or fatigue
  • Hair loss
  • Dizziness and difficulty with focus and memory
  • Digestive Problems
  • Rash
  • Swollen Lymph Glands

What are some common things that can trigger Lupus?

  1. Infection:  Common cold or flu can trigger the immune system to go into a flare.
  2. Stress:  Flares are also common after any physical or emotional trauma
  3. Post Partum:  Flares are common after pregnancy as the hormones are fluctuating.
  4. Sun Exposure:  Especially for those who have photosensitivity
  5. Medications and Herbal Supplements:  Certain medications and herbal supplements can trigger Flares

It is highly recommended to make sure to talk to your doctor about any supplements and herbals that you are planning to take.

If you are experiencing any unfamiliar symptoms, please talk to your doctor as soon as possible.

What can prevent flares?

The antimalarial drug, plaquenil is considered a  health insurance for us Lupus patients.  So please continue to take or ask your doctor if this would be an option for you.

Please remember the following to prevent flares:

  • Take medications as prescribed by your doctor
  • Sleep, have a nightly ritual to ensure you are sleeping well.  Melatonin slow release may help.
  • Manage stress.  Living with Lupus itself can be stressful so it’s important to build resilience to get stronger and find peace within and strive for balance in our lives.  Meditation often helps.
  • Movement:  Rather than thinking exercise, strategic movements like Yoga and Pilates inspired programs will benefit you by enhancing metabolic detoxification to relieve your muscles and joints of any inflammation that may cause arthritis.  Remember, we are more prone to develop arthritis.
  • Elimination Diet:  It’s important to understand what foods serve your body and what foods trigger an immune response.   By eliminating all potential inflammatory foods, you can rest assured that your body will be free from toxins that may be perpetuating your disease.
  • Avoid Excessive Sun Exposure.  Not all Lupus patients are photosensitive.  Avoid sun exposure especially during times of the day where the sun rays are the strongest from 12-3 pm.
