Why Investing In Your Health Is the Smartest Thing You Can Do

Health is something we take for granted until it is taken away. When we don’t have health, we have nothing. Most of us live our lives without paying attention to what truly matters. Only through a serious health crisis do you realize what’s truly important, and the most important things in life are priceless. Investing in your health ensures the quality of life that brings true joy and happiness.

In this blog, I will talk about why investing in your health is the smartest investment you can make.

Autoimmunity is Unpredictable

Because of my underlying autoimmunity, health and wellness are part of who I am. It’s a daily routine and lifestyle I’ve created in order for me to stay ahead of my autoimmunity, so that I can be in control at all times. I realize now that it was something that I thought was a given, not something that was out of reach because even with autoimmune flares, everything seemed to come easy for me.

If I set my goal to feel a certain way, my body always supported me to look and feel my very best. It was something that I can depend on, something that I had complete control over.

It was predictable as cause and effect.

But in reality, autoimmunity is hard and unpredictable. It can often feel too heavy to carry, too painful and exhausting because it takes so much out of you.

All the things that go along with autoimmunity can sometimes be super hard —  the pain, fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath, etc.

Despite its negative effects it also has made me stronger and more centered in ways I couldn’t have imagined if I had not gone through what I’ve gone through. It’s also the reason why I value health today. I learned to honor and love my body. Now, all I want is to support it so it can be strong again.

Step Up

No matter what holistic interventions you try, there will be times that you will feel defeated by autoimmunity. This is why it’s important to make health and wellness a priority in your life. It’s something that needs to be reinforced and reminded of everyday to make sure that you keep it at the forefront of your mind.

Life itself is hard, it’s dynamic and always changing, which can seem like circumstances are impossible to deal with. But it’s never the circumstances of our lives, it’s how we show up and respond to such circumstances that can either deter disease or invite disease.

Just as we trigger the inflammatory cascade in our body to reduce the inflammation in our body, it will need YOU to step up and own your body.

The truth is that many autoimmune patients don’t “own” their body and health. They look to experts both conventional doctors and holistic practitioners, to provide them with answers that they need.

Your Role is Most Important

While seeking intelligent and informed guidance can be helpful, I want to make sure to clearly distinguish between the role of your healthcare provider and your role in your own health.

The healthcare provider’s role is to provide you with information that can help you make informed decisions about your care. Their role isn’t to sway you one way or the other, their role is to provide you with information, support, accountability, and mentoring to enable you to do what’s best for you and your body.

Often we fall prey to doing everything the doctor says but remember, their theoretical or even scientific knowledge isn’t complete without the application of whatever they are touting to your life and your physiology.

Meaning, while they may speak of certain “diets” and “foods” outside of you, they don’t know how you will metabolize or process the foods within you.

For example, the eggs can potentially cause an inflammatory response in the body based on scientific research and data, but your body may metabolize eggs just fine to produce no inflammation.

From there, their theory is debunked. The problem is that many doctors that make claims do so based on their limited knowledge and understanding of theoretical knowledge. They know that it may be for a small population and make a blanket statement that implies relevance to a larger population when in reality, it’s for a limited few.

You don’t know the difference other than you assume that the doctor or practitioner knows more than you so you tend to blindly listen to whatever they say.

The Culprit

As humans we all want something that is super simple and easy to follow. We don’t like to think, we want to be given check off lists so that we can simply check them off.

This kind of holistic approach never does anyone good.

Empowerment is what allows you to have the confidence and clarity. You need to apply its principles to have success in your health endeavors.

Some of you may be dismissing what I’m saying because your symptoms aren’t as bad or because you feel nothing’s ever worked for you. If that’s you, I completely understand where you’re coming from.

I too tried many different holistic approaches before finding the method that made all the difference.  All the programs or approaches I tried were found from a place of needing guidance and recommendations from an expert.

In my mind, I thought there was something I didn’t know and understand. Assuming that I was clearly doing something wrong is why I was so sick.  But after many failed attempts at working with different providers (holistic and conventional), I realized that the very assumption that I was making about how much I didn’t know and how much other providers knew was the culprit.

How can they know more about what my body needs than me? They can make an educated guess looking at a small “pool” of subjects studied in research. Then, extrapolate it to me versus truly knowing that a specific approach will work for me.

It’s like working with an interior designer for your house. When you have no idea what you want and you hire someone reputable to design your house only to find that you hate it simply because you assumed they knew better than what you wanted.

Health is Yours to Own

I want you to take a moment to think about this. When you go to a practitioner, you don’t typically know what you want or need. You expect them to tell you what’s wrong. This is what we have to change in our current system.

Remember, health is yours to own. Your body is yours to keep up with. Just as you brush your teeth and dress in the morning, nobody else can’t do that for you. The desire within you will fuel your will to fire up to make health a priority.

Therefore, making health a priority is not a liability, it’s a responsibility and the best investment you can make.

Start Investing in Your Health

Many of us have retirement funds and make some plans to secure our future. But do you know what your retirement looks like for you? Unless you know how you’d like to spend your retirement, it’s impossible to plan without your involvement.

It’s the same thing about health.

Investing in your health isn’t just about getting massages and going to the gym, but it also includes vacations and quality time with your loved ones without the stress.

Investing in my health means I am not afraid to spend on quality foods and supplements that nourish my body, mind, and soul. Such things may be different programs for health, such as organic groceries, drinking green juice, investing in a juicer, taking up yoga memberships, using meditation apps, having functional nutrition consult, getting health coaching, etc.

When you look at your bills you discover what your priorities are.  We often think we don’t know what we want. But how we spend our money and our time are two key indicators of what our true priorities are. We make time and money for those things that are valuable to us.

I’ve seen many spend over a hundred dollars on their nails and hair but have no money for organic foods. Some spend money on clothing but have no money for health insurance.

Your Health is Worth Investing For

Our priorities shift and change but remember what’s truly important.

As someone who’s been with and without health, I can tell you that health is the most important. I found myself willing to spend on health only after it was taken from me.

But it’s when we are healthy that we must take necessary precautions to ensure our own health versus waiting until it’s destroyed.

Because when you don’t have health, you have nothing. No amount of money, a dream home, vacations, the best spouse and kids don’t matter when you don’t have health to enjoy all the things.

Health is the foundation of our existence and we ourselves are the only ones to truly guard and protect our own health.

You may be doing fine now but where will you be 1 year from now, 3 years from now, or 10 years from now if you didn’t begin to invest in your own health today?

What if your medications increase by a couple and the side effects keep adding more medications to decrease the side effect symptoms? Not to mention the symptoms from autoimmunity that keep getting complicated.

Move Forward While Investing In Your Health

It happened to me when I least expected it. I was following an impeccable diet that’s worked for me for over a decade. I was taking supplements that were supposed to help me to feel better, and it has been working like clockwork.

But last year my health declined severely due to an autoimmune flare that came out of nowhere. I had nothing to blame except to take a hard look at myself in the mirror as I watched myself slowly fall apart and experienced the detriment first hand. It destroyed my old self.

Through this experience I was able to gain a new perspective with a high cost. I keep thinking about what I could’ve done differently or better, but I keep coming back to remembering that it was not my fault.

Everything that happened was exactly what was supposed to happen. I must focus on what I can do going forward, and not waste my time thinking about things that I can’t change anyway.

You Are Not Alone

In reality, we all live with autoimmunity. It’s hella hard sometimes and it can get extremely lonely when you are sick, especially when there’s nobody that can truly help you. You’re in it alone. No matter how much those around you love you, they can’t feel the pain and take your fatigue away. They can only empathize with you and for me that’s even more sad.

So today I wanted to just give you a reminder that YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

We stand together shoulder to shoulder having the same experience, and when I lock my eyes on you, I want you to know I SEE YOU. I HEAR YOU. I FEEL YOU.

Imagine how you’d think and feel when you feel perfectly aligned with yourself inside and out fully healed from your autoimmunity? What does it feel like? Who are you spending time with? What are you doing? What are you thinking?

Begin to have a clear picture of your future self so you can know where you are headed.  Your life is like a ship without a rudder going anywhere but nowhere, when you can be destined to go exactly where you want to go if you plan now what that looks like.
